Probably now a unique Land Rover – hand built by Land Rover Special Vehicles* technicians with many special features, to special order by National Grid UK. Rarely do these come up for sale – a true enthusiast's motor!
* This Defender was built to special order by LRSV and has the LRSV build plate under the bonnet – Contract No. 11145 of 22.4.1998 – I just added the body side LRSV Badges!

Short History:
Built by LR Special Vehicles to order for National Grid UK as a workshop vehicle for rigging and tensioning power cables
Fitted with strengthened double skin chassis rails between the axles, Heavy Duty suspension with double (concentric) rear coil springs (as Camel Trophy Defenders), a full Brownchurch roof rack with front and rear support struts, and chequer plate covered bonnet and wings.
A small capstan winch was fitted to an LRSV extended front bumper and driven by a PTO-driven cardan shaft off the transfer gearbox. For safety the winch was down-rated for tensioning power cables and fitted with emergency engine stop buttons on the front wings, an engine starter button in a cutout in the radiator grille, and a hand throttle.
The interior was fitted with 5 or 6 crew seats with a marine ply bulkhead behind the main cab and a plywood lined rear body with workshop and cooking facilities. The workshop floor, wheel arches and body sides were lined with marine ply, a storage rail was fitted to the RHS and a 2-burner gas cooker was mounted on the LHS wheel arch. Three warning signs relating to the use of the cooker and ventilation were mounted on the ply lining and these have been retained.
The rear side windows - and one of the rear quarter lights – were blanked out with aluminium panels.
Originally the vehicle was painted inside and out, in classic National Grid lime green – no doubt with red wheels! At some later date National Grid repainted the exterior in white, but the lime green remains inside and some is visible on the exterior where the white is flaking.
I bought this stunning Land Rover in November 2004 - for my small travel company in Romania - from a dealer in Dartford Kent who in turn had bought it at auction from the National Grid. I completely refurbished the interior using Exmoor Trim seats and cubby box in Land Rover logo black cloth, which contrasts perfectly (surprisingly so!) with the original National Grid lime green paint.
I renovated the workshop area, re-using much of the original marine ply lining which was stripped out, cleaned and partially re-fitted to create a secure area for client's' luggage. The ply bulkhead was removed and the material re-used to make a large storage trunk for tools and spare parts between the rear wheel arches.
I had the main gearbox and transfer box replaced by Steve Ashcroft with reconditioned units, fitted heavy duty rear half shafts and drive flanges, and changed the PTO-driven capstan winch for a T-Max electric winch suitable for self-recovery (used only 3 times in 6 years!).
The many other additions and modifications marked "CDS" in list below are those carried out by me since 2004. Items marked "LRSV" are original fitments by Land Rover Special Vehicles.
